Understanding which factors can affect the performance of flocculants is crucial

Flocculants are commonly used water treatment agents in sewage treatment. Their effectiveness depends on the combined action of various factors. The main factors influencing the final usage effect include the product's properties, the composition of the flocculant, the dosage of the flocculant, water temperature and pH, as well as the application conditions of the flocculant. To simplify the influencing factors, some people consider the flocculent as a uniform sphere. However, the size, shape, and structure of the flocculent significantly affect its transportation and removal in the fluid. For inorganic polymer flocculants, the higher the degree of polymerization, the greater the relative molecular mass, and the better the flocculation effect.

For organic polymer flocculants, in addition to the influence of the degree of polymerization, it is also closely related to the structure of the flocculant. For example, the flocculation effect of linear structure flocculants is better than that of ring-shaped or branched structure flocculants. Moreover, the larger the relative molecular mass of the flocculant, the more adsorption sites and the greater the charge carried, and its electro-neutralization ability is stronger, and the bridging ability and net capture effect are also stronger.

In different operating environments, each flocculant has an appropriate dosage. Exceeding or falling below this dosage will result in a poorer flocculation effect. When the dosage of the flocculant is low, the flocculation is not complete, while when the dosage is too high, it will lead to the re-stabilization of colloids, and the flocculation effect is also poor.

Research results show that the dosage of the flocculant is approximately half of the amount when the surface of solid particles in the water body adsorbs a saturated amount of macromolecular substances. Because at this time, the probability of bridging of macromolecular substances on the solid particles is extremely high. pH will affect the properties of the flocculant and the charge situation on the surface of colloids. Therefore, it will affect the adsorption, electro-neutralization, hydrogen bonds and other interactions between the flocculant and the colloids.
