Three methods for identifying the level of activated carbon adsorption capacity

1. Check the iodine value: The iodine value is a performance index of activated carbon. The iodine values of nut shells, bamboo charcoal, and coal-based activated carbon are all several hundred. The iodine value of the activated carbon raw material ranges from 800, 850, 900, 950, 1000, 1100 mg/g (The iodine value is a liquid-phase adsorption indicator, which can roughly indicate the size of the specific surface area of activated carbon and whether the micropores are developed. The key to the gas-phase adsorption indicator is to look at: CTC adsorption value, benzene adsorption value. Good activated carbon has CTC > 100% and benzene adsorption > 50%). The adsorption capacity is also different! The cost price is also different! Activated carbon made from coconut shells with the same iodine value has an extremely good adsorption effect on small molecules. Different applications choose different materials of activated carbon. Weigh by hand: As has been introduced above, to improve the adsorption performance of activated carbon, the most effective way is to manufacture as many pore structures as possible on the activated carbon. The more pores, the looser the activated carbon, and the relative density will be lighter. Therefore, good activated carbon will feel lighter in hand. Under the same weight packaging conditions, the activated carbon with good performance will be much larger in volume than inferior activated carbon.

2. Check the bubbles: Put a small amount of activated carbon into water. Due to the penetration effect of water, water will gradually enter the pore structure of activated carbon, forcing the air in the pores to be expelled, thus generating a series of extremely fine bubbles. A thin line of tiny bubbles will be pulled out in the water, and at the same time, a series of bubble sounds will be emitted, which is very interesting. The more intense this phenomenon occurs and the longer it lasts, the better the adsorption performance of the activated carbon is.

3. Check the decolorization ability: Another manifestation of the adsorption ability of activated carbon is the decolorization ability. Activated carbon has the magical ability to turn colored liquids into light or colorless ones. This is actually caused by the fact that activated carbon adsorbs the pigment molecules in the colored liquid. Due to this characteristic of activated carbon, it is widely used in the sugar industry for the production process of converting red sugar to white sugar. Take two transparent cups, put pure water in one cup, then drop a drop of red ink (here, any pigment that is easy to observe but does not change the nature of the water can be used, such as blue ink, printer color ink, but not ink and carbon ink) and stir evenly. Then pour half of the colored water into another cup as a comparison sample. Put activated carbon into the colored water, the quantity should reach half or more of the water volume. The effect will be more obvious. After standing for 10-20 minutes, compare with the comparison water sample. Under the same conditions, the stronger the decolorization effect indicates the better adsorption performance of the activated carbon.
